TEACHING VIBE

What brought you to yoga? We love a good origin story.

I often describe this transition rather dramatically because it was very dramatic to me at the time. A career in sales and marketing for 12 years began to feel like my soul was being torn apart, piece by piece, day by day...a few unexpected lay offs and a very dark and lonely time in my life led me past the Charlestown yoga studio one afternoon. They were looking for volunteers to work for a non-profit organization called, "There & Back Again," a re-integration program for veterans that offered alternative healing through yoga, reiki, etc. In exchange, I received yoga classes. I had no money, no job, but yoga became enough. I would take two, sometimes three classes a day. One day, the owner of the studio at the time, Sue Lynch, suggested the teacher training. I dug into my 401K, thought it would be a healthy outlet for me, but never imagined actually teaching. 11 years later, here I am!

How would you describe your teaching flow?

My focus is teaching students at all levels to be safe in their bodies and how the power of breath, movement and drishti can create such integrity in your postures. There is so much power in being. My expertise is in Vinyasa Flow. I love the dance, I love the flow. My teaching style has changed a bit over the last 5 years and has really transformed into a very spiritual practice for the student as well as me. I believe that the world we live in today demands more time to turn things off and feel supported by words of positivity and strength in our lives. It is this sense of embodiment that we need to feel and tap into and take with us every moment we step off our mat.

Music Preferences? What is always on your playlist? Favorite artist?

I love music. Keeping that in mind, it can make an enjoyable yoga class much less appealing if it is too distracting. It should not be the focus but if you know your students and they "get you," you can play a bit! I love any and all the artists at Levitate Music Festival in Marshfield. Since I am a Vermonter at heart, the inner hippie often comes out in class. I have been known to play "Scarlet Begonias" by the The Grateful Dead, which also happens to be my daughter's name.

What was your most memorable yoga experience?

While undergoing breast cancer treatment in 2011 at age 35, I practiced Hot Power Yoga at Open Doors Duxbury, with a bald head, surrounded by my tribe! A shout out to all the teachers at that time who lifted me and supported me, Barbara Froio, Karen Donahue and Chris Biggins (who is no longer with us), but hugged me the first time she saw me and I just knew I would be safe there.

Any teacher shoutouts? Favorite yoga teacher?

No favorites. I believe every teacher I have practiced with has a unique gift to offer and I love that moment when I step onto my mat and start to find the rhythm between my practice and their offerings. There are so many talented instructors right here on the South Shore and I feel grateful to have the opportunity to connect with each and every one of them!
