TEACHING VIBE

What brought you to yoga? We love a good origin story.

I showed up on my mat for the first time after a long history of uncontrolled seizures and surgeries. Following the last surgery, I went from having seizures everyday to every couple of months. Yet I still struggled with this, I desired perfection. I realized I had to make a shift within myself. Life was not black and white but needed balance. What could I do to continue down the path of healing and seeking out freedom? The medical team had done everything they could do to get me to where I was at, but now it was up to me. I decided to try yoga knowing nothing about it. Each time I arrived, I was able to step away from the struggle and pain within my life and embrace the moment, the breath, and like minded people around me. It allowed me to grow and opened my eyes more to realize that everyone had their challenges. I was not alone but part of a community. After six months of getting a ride and practicing, my seizures were under control and off I went to get my drivers license after 23 years, this was freedom I thought. Years later, as I continued down the yoga path, I realized the sense of freedom was not the license or the external material. Freedom was within me always. I thank the yoga practice for guiding me to this discovery.

How would you describe your teaching flow?

Mindful and diverse. From power vinyasa to slow flows, the newcomer population and inclusion classes integrating the community with differing abilities. Each class is tailored to the individuals in front of me giving encouragement and inspiration to students at all levels.

Music Preferences? What is always on your playlist? Favorite artist?

My classes are typically revolved around the power of silence, allowing for breath to be the music.

What was your most memorable yoga experience?

Showing up for the first time at HMEA (a day habilitation) to teach yoga to people with cerebral palsy, down syndrome, intellectual disabilities and autism among other conditions. With my own extraordinary health journey, I thought I was "flawed". How could I think that of myself? If that was true then I would be thinking the same of the students in front of me. This was a life changing moment on how I saw myself and those around me. It instead informed and inspired my passion for teaching to the diverse population. I have continued making a deep connection to these students over the last 8 years while having people move, respond, and relax in new ways. Such joy in the room and joy in my heart.

Any teacher shoutouts? Favorite yoga teacher?

The greatest teacher(s) is the voice within each student in front of me.
