TEACHING VIBE

What brought you to yoga? We love a good origin story.

In college, while hoping to develop a regular exercise regimen, I eventually stumbled upon a weekly class with wonderful yoga teacher, Lisa Clark. After college, I began studying with Mary Norton, and after a year or two of Mary's classes -- and one memorable trip to Kripalu (which was transitioning at the time from an ashram to a yoga center) -- Mary encouraged me to enroll in Kripalu's Teacher Training program. I loved it, and continued to study at Kripalu through the years that followed. I still try to go there every few years to refresh my teaching skills and my personal practice.

How would you describe your teaching flow?

I teach a very gentle style of yoga, incorporating warm-ups throughout the class, transitioning in a smooth sequence from one posture to the next. Every class begins and ends lying down. I give very clear verbal instructions while doing all of the poses along with the students. I will occasionally offer verbal tips, but I almost never give physical assists.

Music Preferences? What is always on your playlist? Favorite artist?

In my yoga classes, I play quiet music throughout, but it's intended to be a pleasant background sound that helps students to tune out potential distractions (rather than attracting their attention). Some of my students' favorites are "Cello Blue" by David Darling and selections from "Afterglow" by Michael Hoppe, Martin Tillman and Tim Wheater.

What was your most memorable yoga experience?

Ask me sometime about teaching my first "real" class and the very loud noise of which I probably should NOT have inquired about the cause!

Any teacher shoutouts? Favorite yoga teacher?

Mary Norton was one of my first yoga teachers and her influence remains strong.

In addition to yoga, I run, bike, kayak, and SUP.

I'm a huge fan of music -- all types -- and I still buy CDs.
